Upcoming
Activities and Events
There is a
lot going on! These are Events posted for August 2008.
New Look for Newport Lutheran!
By the time you read this, we will already be back in our newly re-floored and repainted sanctuary. Be prepared. The look is very different and exciting for us. Polished concrete is our new flooring and fresh paint all around gives our sanctuary a fresh and new feeling. This project is in observance of our 70th anniversary of ministry here. We will worship for the first time in our newly redone sanctuary on the first weekend of the month. Come and join us.
Sunday School signups
It's that time of year again - time to think about the 2008/2009 Sunday school year. We are currently recruiting volunteers to help teach the following grade levels: preschool, preK/kindergarten, 1st-2nd, 3rd-5th, and 6th-8th. If you have either taught last year and would like to return or are new to teaching and would like to volunteer to staff a class, please call the office as soon as possible.
We are also recruiting teen helpers from grades 9th-12th to assist in classrooms. Teaching Sunday school is a very rewarding experience. Orientation for teachers and helpers is Tuesday, September 2nd at 6:30 p.m. Rally Day is Sunday, September 7th, at 10:15 a.m. The first day for classes is Sunday, September 14th at 10:15 a.m.
Please give Patti Schneider a call if you are interested in helping. We also will need substitute teachers. Thank You.
Registration is beginning for the 2008/2009 Sunday school year. Registration forms can be found in the Narthex on the kiosk. Please place completed forms in the basket provided. Classes are based on the age/grade of your child(ren) at the time Sunday school begins. If you have any questions, please call for Patti Schneider.

There will be more info as the time gets closer.

Jesus - Justice -Jazz
High school teens mark your calendars for July 22nd-26th, 2009, which are the dates for the ELCA Youth Gathering "Jesus-Justice-Jazz" in New Orleans, LA.
Registration begins September 15th for the Gathering, so we will need to know whether or not you are ready to make a strong commitment to attend. Currently, fundarisers have been taking place to raise funds to help subsidize costs related to the gathering. In order to receive a subsidy, you must work at most of the fundraisers.
There will be a meeting, Sunday, September 14th at noon to talk about the Gathering so that you can make a final decision regarding participation. Parents are welcome to attend this informational meeting. If you have any questions beforehand, please call Patti Schneider.

Quilting
Thanks to Len & Verna Carlson, 13 quilts were delivered in June to the Lutheran World Relief (LWR) warehouse in South St. Paul and 21 quilts are ready to be delivered to the South East Asian Ministry (SEAM) office in St. Paul. Thank you quilters!
LWR informed us that because of all the worldly disasters they are now in desperate need of quilts. LWR quilts are sometimes used as tarps - for shelter - for room dividers, etc., so many hundreds are needed and SEAM's needs are ongoing. They always need more quilts.
Here at Newport Lutheran we are blessed with donations of fabrics and yarn and THRIVENT supplies the batting for fillers. Several of our women sew together tops and bottoms used for the quilts. We have five very dedicated quilters who continue the quilting mission here at Newport, but we urgently need others to join us for a couple of hours twice a month (the 1st and 3rd Thursdays from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.) to simply tie yarn knots to fasten tops, fillers, and backs together.
Will you help? Please think of the reward you will have knowing how your help will benefit so many others who are in desperate need. Please come! Good fellowship - coffee and snacks are included.

Men's Bible
Study
The Men's
Bible Study group meets the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month.
We gather at 8:00 a.m. for conversation (usually about current
issues in our community and in the world) and to learn about God's
Word for us and how it relates to the current issues in our lives.
The conversation
is lively, the fellowship is meaningful, the issues are relevant,
and the continental breakfast is energizing. All men are invited
to join us!
